Hi! I’m Ariel.
RDN, LD, CDCES, published author, & President of Above Diabetes
At a young age, I saw the direct impact food and exercise have on my blood sugar. I’m not proud to say, but I grew up eating pasta-roni, Lucky Charms`, and jam on white bread. Early on, I saw a trend that when I ate such foods and wasn’t physically active, my blood sugar, energy level, and mood were all over the place. Also, I was diagnosed at the age of 4 in 1995, which was a time without CGMs and automated insulin delivery systems.
A diabetes diagnosis is always tough, but because of my experiences, I have dedicated my professional life to become a healthcare professional. After several years of schooling and internships, I graduated in Dietetics, became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), then after spending over 1000 hours working at an Endo clinic, became a Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist (CDCES). Since then, I have spent several more 1000s of hours with people with diabetes, and will continue to do.
As an educator who has diabetes, I love teaching people how to interpret their own data and change lifestyle habits in order to drastically improve their life with diabetes. Knowledge is power, and once you understand how behaviors, foods, and exercise affect YOUR blood sugar, you can unleash better outcomes and improve your quality of life.
Everyday, we learn a little more about ourselves due to our diabetes. We are our own best advocate.
It’s not about perfection, it’s about progression.

Exercise is Difficult
CLIENT BEFORE: “Exercise is difficult. Sometimes it makes me drop, other times it makes me go high. I thought exercise is supposed to make everyone drop! What is wrong with my body??”
CLIENT AFTER: “There are two main different types of exercise (aerobic and anaerobic). Consistent aerobic activity makes my BG drop after about 15 min, especially if I have insulin on board (IOB) and anaerobic typically makes my BG rise. The harder I push with my anaerobic exercise, the faster my BG spikes. I can use both types of exercise as tools and strategize my insulin delivery for better blood sugar management.”
Super Yummy Food…Never again?
CLIENT BEFORE: I can never eat super delicious foods again. It completely destroys my blood sugar. Which then just makes me not eat it, then I finally give in, binge, and then my BG is really all over the place.
CLIENT AFTER: While it’s important to keep the majority of my diet full of plants, lean protein, and heart-healthy fats; I need room to enjoy life with my loved ones and at celebrations. With a little strategy such as a profile with more aggressive settings for my basal, correction, and carb, I can enjoy the celebrations AND still keep decent blood sugar levels. And if my BG is a little messy compared to my usual, it’s a learning experience and it for a small moment rather than my usual day-to-day.
Timing of Insulin is Confusing
CLIENT BEFORE: “I do not understand timing with my insulin before meals. I’m always going high or low, or both! My glucocoaster (glucose + rollercoaster) is very tiring physically and emotionally exhausting.”
CLIENT AFTER: “By using my CGM or BG test readings before my meals, and deciding on the macronutrients I’ll be eating, I can have much more stable pre- and post-prandial blood sugar. After working with Ariel and looking at my CGM reports, I know if I am eating something low in carbs (less than 15 g), and my BG is close to target range, I do not need to bolus 15 minutes beforehand. It’s more like 5 minutes. However, if I’m above target or I’m eating high carbs, I will need to increase the amount of time between my bolus and eating. If my BG is above target AND I’m eating high carbs, I know to add even more time between bolusing and eating. Also, it’s good practice to start a meal with the fiber/protein/fat part of my meal first and the carb portion last so that I can delay and reduce my BG from spiking.”
Rationing Insulin and Weight Gain
CLIENT BEFORE: Insulin makes me gain weight so I rather limit my insulin for my meals and then if I go high, I’ll correct to get back to target range. I often go high, but it’s better than taking SO much insulin before a meal. This strategy will help me lose weight.
CLIENT AFTER: My previous thinking was completely wrong. When I do not take enough insulin before a meal, it actually requires MORE insulin to correct my high blood sugar. Not only that, the consistent highs can worsen body inflammation and make weight loss even more difficult AND the drastic BG drop can aggressively increase my appetite. Not to mention, the BG swings cause me to get a bit moody and very tired. This can be difficult for my friends, family, and significant other. While it’s been a mind game to reset the way I think, I understand that by giving myself the amount of insulin my body requires BEFORE a meal, it not only improves my time in range, takes out the BG swings, bad mood, low energy, decreases inflammation, and reduces longterm complications and guilt, but it actually reduces my total daily insulin?? I never knew!

“I appreciate Ariel so much for helping me get my blood sugar back in control. Before Ariel, I was constantly between 200-300 mg/dL, now I am averaging around 80-120 mg/dL. Along with improving my diabetes, I’m down 20 pounds.
Darlene, UT
“Today, after 4 months working Ariel, I’m down 52 lbs, I’ve reversed my diabetes. My doctor not only took me off the diabetic list, but even the pre-diabetic list! I don’t take any metformin and I sit at a 5.5% A1c.”
Lynn, UT
“Ariel is truly inspired. I have been to countless doctors and dietitians who supposedly specialized in diabetes, but I never received the level of empathy, education, and expertise as I did with Ariel within a single consultation.”
Dee, ND
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2017 and from the beginning I was determined to stay healthy but despite my efforts I struggled to manage my blood sugar. Ariel has done an incredible job in helping me to understand T1D and how diet and exercise affect my blood glucose levels. She’s taught me how to use my insulin pump much more effectively and with her help I have been able to maintain a lower A1C.

I wanted to thank you for all the advice and encouragement you gave me last year about Looping. [My current] Time in Range is 97%. This is so much better than I ever could have dreamed. Of course, the real benefit is how much of the stress and burden has been relieved. (And being able to sleep through the night!) I have nowhere near as many spikes or drops, or as much randomness, so it’s a lot easier to see where adjustments need to be made. I found it quite beneficial to consult with you, despite the pandemic. I know I wouldn’t have gotten this far as quickly without your advice. Thank you so very much.
David
